How to Be Happy in 12 Powerful Ways

Is it possible that you are one of those people searching for how the meaning of life can make you be happy? To be happy is a mission that some people, unfortunately, never achieve. People spend much of their lives searching for what makes them happy. Do you know what you need to be happy?

As we go about our daily lives, advertising and popular culture bombard us with images and notions of who we should be and what we need to be happy and make our lives more fulfilling. Advertisements suggest we will be happy if we buy the latest smartphone or drive a specific type of car. So, do we buy these things because they make us happy?

Is it possible that buying these items is a way for us to show off our accomplishments to others, making us feel better about ourselves? What if you don’t have the money or even want the advertised items? So, what comes next?

Do we submit to the pressure to fit in and be like everyone else and buy things we don’t want and need and appear to be happy? If so, we don’t have any other option but to sell ourselves out and become superficial. If we want to be happy, we must look outside of ourselves for something or someone to make us happy.

But what if there is another option? What if you already have everything you need to be happy and fulfilled in life? Wouldn’t it be a wonderful world if we could just wake up in the morning feeling fulfilled and ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead?

1) Determine your life's purpose.

Your purpose is the single most important aspect of living a happy life. This may sound like something out of a self-help book or a Hollywood movie, but it is true. You can pretend you don’t have a life purpose or that it’s unimportant, but that would be completely missing the point.

It is not always easy to discover your life’s purpose, but it is doable. People going through difficult divorces can find new meaning in assisting other divorced families dealing with similar issues. What about the cancer survivor who became a certified yoga instructor to help others find peace through the practice? Everyone has a purpose in life that will make them be happy because they are living in their true life; all you have to do is find it and embrace it.

2) Identify and pursue your life's passion.

Be Happy with Your Passion

“Do what you love and makes you happy,” I know, is yet another popular piece of advice for living a a joyful and fulfilling life. And, as with most clichés, there’s a reason it’s so popular: it works.

Determine what you want to do for a living and how to make it a career. Find the courage to change whatever it is in your life that makes you unhappy, even if you don’t like it or, worse, despise it. I understand that it’s much easier to sit at your desk and complain about your job, or to look around the room to see what everyone else has that you don’t. You must, however, stop comparing yourself to others, as many people do, and recognize that you have the power to create the life you want for yourself.

3) Make choices that will allow you to live a better life.

We all have to make decisions every day. Every time you choose between doing something that benefits you but does nothing for others and doing something that benefits others but does not necessarily benefit you, you are laying the groundwork for a happy life. Choosing to serve others, no matter how big or small, will always bring you inner joy.

4) Accept yourself as you are right now.

As worn as it may sound, accepting who you are and what you look like, regardless of what others think, makes it a lot easier to achieve happiness. People will always judge whether you are attractive or whether you drive a nice car or have good fashion sense. People will make comments about your tattoos and hairstyle, but if you’re only trying to impress yourself, it’s easy to dismiss what others say.

5) Recognize that there will always be someone who is more attractive than you.

Someone will always have more money, speak a foreign language better than you, and play the guitar better than you. Just because those people have something you don’t doesn’t mean they’re happier. They are probably irritated or angered by the same things that irritate or anger you.

6) Be honest with yourself and with others.

Being honest with yourself does not mean that you should reveal every detail of your life to others or tell them what they want to hear, but it does mean that you should be open with yourself and others. Most people lie because they are afraid of being judged, embarrassed, or losing someone’s approval. But those who are the most honest and follow their instincts are the happiest.

7) Attempt to look on the bright side of any situation that life throws your way.

Every adversity has a silver lining—a way it can help or strengthen you that isn’t immediately apparent. When something bad happens, think about how you can use it to your advantage. And when something good happens, think about how you can help someone else succeed.

8) Get up and move around regularly.

Be Happy and Exercise

When my friends are upset or ill, I notice they aren’t as active as they should be. This causes irritability, difficulty sleeping, and a general sense of being unhappy all the time. The average person should aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day, whether it’s a workout, outdoor activities, or simply taking a walk around your neighborhood.

9) Live simply in order to save money for other purposes.

Spend more time building a life for yourself and your family rather than hoarding items you don’t need. It’s not a bad thing to live as cheaply as possible, (it’s actually a sign of the times!) so you could spend more money on trips and activities for your kids. You don’t have to have the most cutting-edge electronics or designer clothes. Just be happy and enjoy every minute of your time together.

10) Think about how much you love the sincere people in your life.

Recognizing that we all have flaws but still love each other is one of the most effective ways I’ve found to improve my mood and eliminate stress. When you realize that everyone who genuinely cares loves you just as much as you love them, it will be easier to step back from conflicts and disagreements and remember that your true loved ones will always be there for you. Being genuinely loved will make your life very happy!

11) Foster a positive sense of self-acceptance.

Take the time to figure out why you aren’t allowing yourself to be happy. Even if the answer appears to be simple, such as not feeling smart or handsome enough, digging deeper will help you better understand any obstacles that are preventing you from reaching your full potential. Consider and record your responses to the following questions:

– What is it that I am truly afraid of?

– Do my uncertainties or concerns keep me from living life to the fullest and being happy?

– If that’s the case, why do I continue to think about them?

After you have a better understanding of yourself, you can take steps to be happier with who you are.

12) Set attainable goals for yourself.

Reduce your expectations of how things will turn out by smiling more frequently, especially when meeting new people. Having realistic expectations demands viewing everything as a learning opportunity rather than obsessing over minor details. Being happy does not mean that you will not face challenges; rather, it means that no obstacle will deter you.
